A cheetah crosses the open African savanna with a young gazelle in its jaws. In this Animal Discovery, we follow her from the plains into the long grass, where she settles down to feed while staying alert for lions and hyenas that could steal her meal at any moment. Cheetahs are the fastest land animals, but they are also among the most vulnerable predators: they often lose their kills to stronger hunters, so every meal has to be eaten quickly and carefully. Watch how she carries the prey, checks her surroundings again and again, and finally feeds in the quiet of the grass.
Filmed on the African savanna (December 2022). Natural ambient soundscape added in post-production.
