For twenty years, Grizzly 399 raised her cubs beside a highway, and everyone said she was tame. She wasn’t. She was hiding. Biologists from the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team and the National Park Service now have the data to explain why, and it points to a danger most bear stories get wrong.
Inside Yellowstone, 49% of grizzly cubs survive. Outside the park, 83%. In 2024, 70 of 72 recorded grizzly deaths in the ecosystem were caused by humans, yet nobody counts the cubs that die before age two. We test three explanations (too many bears, a collapsing food supply, an ancient behaviour), and show which one the evidence supports, which one it contradicts, and which one science still cannot settle.
